The Art of Laser-Cut Appliqué in Quilting
Quilting has been a cherished tradition for centuries, with styles and techniques passed down through generations. However, with the evolution of technology and modern artistry, quilting has expanded beyond traditional patterns, embracing contemporary and innovative designs. Whether you’re a fan of timeless, heirloom-style quilts or prefer cutting-edge, modern aesthetics, laser-cut appliqué can seamlessly fit into your creative process.
Precision Meets Tradition
For quilters who value the intricate patterns of traditional quilting, laser-cut appliqué offers a new way to bring those beloved designs to life with even greater precision. Traditional appliqué often involves meticulous cutting and trimming of fabric pieces by hand—a time-consuming process that requires exceptional skill. With laser cutting, quilters can achieve the same level of detail and craftsmanship, but in a fraction of the time.
Westfield Laser Design’s laser-cut appliqué pieces are clean, uniform, and perfectly accurate. This level of precision ensures that your traditional designs, whether they’re floral motifs, historical patterns, or intricate borders, will come together flawlessly. The result? A quilt that holds the charm and warmth of traditional craftsmanship, with the added benefit of enhanced accuracy and ease.
A Modern Twist on Appliqué
For those who love experimenting with modern quilting styles, laser-cut appliqué opens up an exciting world of possibilities. Modern quilts often feature bold geometric shapes, abstract designs, and minimalist patterns—perfectly suited to the precision of laser cutting. Instead of laboriously cutting out complex shapes by hand, quilters can quickly work with pre-cut appliqué pieces that match their vision.
One of the great advantages of laser-cut appliqué for modern quilters is the freedom to mix and match designs, creating unique compositions. Whether you’re working with large, bold blocks of color or intricate overlapping designs, laser-cut pieces make it easier to execute your vision with confidence. Westfield Laser Design offers endless design options, ensuring that you can create something completely one-of-a-kind.
Blending Old and New Styles
Many quilters find joy in blending traditional and modern elements, creating quilts that honor the past while embracing contemporary influences. Laser-cut appliqué makes this blend possible by offering traditional quilters an easier way to incorporate modern elements, and giving modern quilters access to more classical, intricate designs.
Whether you’re quilting a family heirloom with a fresh twist or creating a bold new design that draws on classical elements, laser-cut appliqué allows you to explore and experiment without the usual limitations of hand-cutting.
Fast, Easy, and Consistent
One of the key benefits of laser-cut appliqué, regardless of style, is the time saved in preparation. No more struggling with scissors or rotary cutters—laser-cut pieces are ready to go as soon as you are. Additionally, these pre-fused appliqué pieces adhere easily to your project and offer consistent results. This means your quilting process will be faster, and your final quilt will look polished and professional.
Quilters working on multiple pieces or for group projects, such as quilting clubs or charity projects, will especially appreciate the time-saving nature of laser-cut appliqué. The uniformity of the pieces ensures that everyone’s contributions fit together perfectly, no matter the level of experience.

The word applique comes from the French appliquer, “to put on.” It is most commonly used in quilting as embellishment for quilts, but is becoming more popular in making home decor and apparel. Often cutting applique is considered an arduous, time consuming process due to the intricacy of detailed designs and the level of detail was often limited to the cutting skill of the quilter. However, laser cutting removes the time and skill required by providing perfectly cut pieces.
When we say pre-fused, we mean that your appliqué pieces have a special backing attached. This backing allows for you to tack/lightly adhere each piece to your background to ensure it stays in place while putting together the full project. After considerable testing we have found that SoftFuse Premium works best with laser cut applique. SoftFuse provides good adhesion of the applique piece to the background fabric while still providing a supple feel that is less stiff than other fusibles we’ve tested. SoftFuse is soft enough that you can either hand or machine sew the applique. SoftFuse will not gum up your sewing machine.
Fusible is not permanent and edges of the applique may begin to peel if not sewn down or otherwise adhered to a surface. The purpose of fusible is to tack the pieces in place while putting a project together.
Laser cut offers precise cutting of pieces in minimal time.
Most projects require a background (fabric, canvas, wall), scissors for snipping small connections that keep pieces together during transport, an iron (any iron will do) for tacking and a way to adhere the fabric to the background more permanently once project is complete.
You can certainly sew your project by hand or by a machine. The fusible does not affect the needles, making either option possible. You can also avoid sewing by using other craft forms for final adhesion such as decoupage or clear paint on wood or canvas backgrounds.
Quilt by Numbers (QBN) is a collection of kits that provide a freezer paper template that is reverse cut allowing you to perfectly position each piece as it is shown on the cover of the kit. Simply iron on the template to your background, place each piece in the corresponding cut out, tack the applique in place and peel the template off. It’s sew easy!
Because applique is pre-cut, we do not include a pattern. However, we do include a placement guide or template and instructions how to use the kit. You have all the instructions you need to complete the project without having to buy a separate pattern.
Some of our kits do include background fabrics and others do not. Please check the product page for each kit for specific details about the contents of the kit.
Kits include applique pieces with fusible, background and binding fabrics when relevant, a step by step instruction guide, and placement guide. We also offer a template and color guide with our Quilt By Numbers Collections.
Thread, backing or batting, which can be required for sewing into a quilt or wall hanging.
The fusible is not permanent, so you can peel the piece off carefully and adjust. Tack it back down with heat.
